When it comes to explorer yachts, the 23.8-metre M/Y 'Vanguard' doesn’t just play the game—it rewrites the rules. Built by Naval Yachts, this aluminium expedition vessel is purpose-built to navigate from icy polar waters to sun-soaked tropical anchorages without missing a beat. With her rugged design, innovative systems, and striking efficiency, Vanguard is an adventurer’s dream. Now, she’s on the market, ready to take her next owner into the wild blue yonder.

Tough Enough for the Harshest Seas

Vanguard isn’t just about appearances (although with her striking orange hull she certainly stands out from the crowd)—she’s the real deal. Her ice-strengthened aluminium hull is engineered to handle Arctic conditions as confidently as it beaches on remote tropical shores. Yes, she can "dry out" safely, giving you access to tidal waters that would leave most yachts high and dry. Whether it’s gliding through narrow fjords or anchoring in shallow lagoons, this explorer yacht is built to get you there without compromise.

With fully redundant systems, Vanguard ensures that no unforeseen equipment failure will stop her in her tracks. Safety credentials are second to none. Certified MCA Category (2) and CE Category A, she’s well-equipped for serious offshore work. What’s more, Vanguard was constructed to MCA Category (0) standards—meaning she’s capable of unlimited offshore operations with just a few upgrades like an SSB radio, additional first aid equipment, and extra engine insulation.

And here’s the kicker: she’s the only yacht like this currently on the market. A new build would take three years, so if you’re serious about expedition cruising, there’s no time to waste.

Hybrid Power: Efficiency Meets Flexibility

If there’s one feature that puts Vanguard in a league of her own, it’s her Praxis Hybrid Drive System. This setup offers incredible flexibility, allowing her to switch seamlessly between diesel and electric propulsion. Cruising quietly through protected marine areas or anchoring in serene bays without disturbing nature is something many buyers are now insisting on. Her twin John Deere diesel engines (160hp each) and Praxis DC electric motors (30kW each) are equally capable, giving you the best of both worlds.

With a 3,000-nautical mile range at a steady 9 knots, Vanguard is made for long-distance exploration. Her 120kWh lithium-ion battery bank, supplemented by a 6.3kW solar array, ensures extended periods of off-grid operation. Need to run some of the 'hotel load' overnight without the hum of a generator? No problem. The system is designed to make extended cruising as comfortable as it is efficient.

Stabilised for Comfort in Any Sea

Rolling seas are a non-issue aboard Vanguard. She’s equipped with the very capable and cutting-edge DMS MagnusMaster stabilisers, which harness the Magnus effect to reduce roll both underway and at anchor. These retractable stabilisers are not only effective but also lightweight and silent—a perfect match for the yacht’s hybrid ethos. Whether crossing the Drake Passage or enjoying a calm sunset, stability is something that all explorer yachts must have.

Systems Built for the Long Haul

A true explorer yacht needs reliable, efficient systems, and Vanguard delivers in spades. Her Praxis automation system integrates navigation, lighting, and HVAC into a seamless interface, streamlining operation and allowing the skipper to focus on what matters: the journey.

Her antifouling is another standout feature. The Intersleek system reduces drag and maximises efficiency while requiring minimal maintenance. With fewer haul-outs, you’ll spend more time exploring and less time in the yard.

Interior Comfort Meets Expedition-Ready Functionality

Step aboard, and Vanguard welcomes you with an interior that’s as inviting as it is functional. Designed by Arista Marine, the styling balances pale timber finishes with dark accents, creating a timeless, understated elegance. It’s a space that feels at home whether moored in Monaco or anchored off Antarctica.

She accommodates six guests in three en-suite cabins: a master suite, a VIP double, and a twin. The main deck’s open-plan layout combines the helm, galley, and salon into a versatile living area that can convert to sleep two additional guests. Upstairs, the flybridge offers an outdoor helm station, dining space, and panoramic views—ideal for soaking in your surroundings.

Navigation and Safety That Go Above and Beyond

With Vanguard, you’re equipped to venture where others can’t. Her navigation suite features professional-grade TZ Professional software paired with Furuno radar, ensuring safe passage even in the most remote regions. Dual independent rudders and Dockmaster dynamic positioning technology allow for pinpoint manoeuvrability, whether docking in tight quarters or maintaining station in open water.

Safety is paramount, and Vanguard is overbuilt in all the right ways. Commercial-grade liferafts, extensive onboard spares, and redundant systems across propulsion and steering ensure peace of mind wherever the journey takes you.

Smart, Custom Features for Real Adventure

No explorer yacht would be complete without thoughtful touches, and Vanguard is no exception. Her carbon fibre FEM davit can handle tender launch and recovery with ease. The tender itself—a Highfield 5.5m RIB with a 100hp Yamaha engine—is built for serious exploration, the same model trusted by the UK Antarctic Survey. Other notable features include:

  • Solar-powered energy independence for extended anchoring in remote areas.
  • Military-spec FLIR thermal camera for enhanced safety during night navigation.
  • Dynamic positioning system to maintain position without anchoring.
  • Carbon fibre pasarelle, lightweight and robust for reliable boarding.

Why Vanguard Stands Out

Explorer yachts are a rare breed, but even in this exclusive category, Vanguard sets herself apart. Think of her as the hybrid love child of an FPB and a superyacht, offering world-class capability with modern sustainability and comfort. She’s not just built to explore; she’s built to do it in style.

Now Available for Sale

Currently based in Fort Lauderdale, Vanguard is listed for $4,700,000 USD (VAT not paid). For those ready to trade ordinary cruising for extraordinary adventure, she’s a golden opportunity.
